DeSoto Chute National Wildlife Refuge

5 mi E. of Blair on US Hwy 30 - The refuge provides a sanctuary for wildlife, especially migratory birds. Unique amongst other national wildlife refuges, DeSoto is home to one of the nation's premier Civil War era museum collections consisting of the cargo of the sunken 1865-era steamboat Bertrand. Enjoy wildlife-viewing and scenic landscapes along a paved driving tour route, as well as heated and air-conditioned views of DeSoto Lake. More than 200,000 artifacts are on display year-round at the visitor center. Fishing, no-wake boating, canoeing, kayaking, wildlife photography, interpretive programs and nature trails. Refuge open during daylight hours. Visitor center open daily, 9am-4:30pm. Closed federal holidays. Admission: $3 per car, $15 annual pass. Group rates: $20 commercial vans and buses, $30 for groups of 21 or more people. 712-388-4800
